JOHN EDWARD SAMPAGA

John Edward Sampaga, 47, aka John E. Sam the Balloon Man passed away on Friday, January 22, 2010 at Renown Hospital with his family and best friend at his bedside. He was born on April 10, 1962 in Salinas, CA.

He is survived by his sons, John David (JD) 20 of Elko, and Jared Phillip, 19 of Stead, his parents Mr. and Mrs. John Sharp Sampaga (Margaret) of Lemmon Valley numerous cousins, uncles and aunts in California, Texas and England, and his best friend, Jim Junkman of Stead.

John worked at Thermocare in Incline Village for the past 8 or 9 years. Part of a group of local entertainers, he was a balloon sculpture extraordinaire, as well as a ventriloquist, clown, magician and stand up comic. With balloons, he sculptured an 18 wheeler – from cab to trailer, at Sierra Sid truck stop.

Nothing was too difficult.

Often at a restaurant when he saw children having a birthday party, he would make animals and other items and the only pay was their smiles.

He performed at local casinos and during many events in the area. He won 1st place in a contest for balloon sculpturing in Las Vegas.

He taught magic, ventriloquism and balloon sculpturing to many, and also briefly at TMCC. He did his balloon magic with his dad and sons, every year for 16 years at the Juvenile Diabetes ‘Walk to Cure Diabetes”, providing entertainment for the children and helping to get support for a cure for Type I (Juvenile) diabetes, and also the March of Dimes’‘Walk for Babies” to find a cure for premature birth.

His smile was contagious.

Although only 47 years old, he lived life to the fullest, always ready to volunteer, making others laugh and smile was his talent, which was only exceeded by his generosity and his magic hands. He will be missed by many, and to our son — my best pal, we love you forever.

Services will be at the Masonic Chapel at Final Wishes Funeral home, 437 Stoker, Reno on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at 10 a.m. call for reception information and location 775-327-4377 or 775-972-8915. Donations in John name should be directed to the victims of the Haitian earthquake.

One of his most famous awards was for his “One-eyed-one-horned-flying purple people eater,” at the Clown Convention in Laughlin a couple of years ago.

Sad news has overcome the Northern Nevada Magic and Variety Arts Community. Our brother; John E. Sam (John Sampaga; AKA “Balloon Man”)  passed away last night after complications during his hospitalization.

John was one of my personal “Go To Guys” when it came time to book top-notch, quality variety strolling entertainment. I don’t think there is a single person in Northern Nevada who would dispute his massive passion and love for his art as well as his incredible skill, talent and old-fashioned likeability that he generated every time he performed!

People just plain LOVED him! I know I did too!

Talented performer and loving father, John’s life was his boys as well as his passion, zest and zeal for his craft. THE ‘undisputed’ king of balloons made John a local staple for events and entertainment and he always left his audience with a giddy smile and an inspired sense of wonder!

We will do our best to keep everyone posted as we hear from his family.

We have lost a friend and an amazing talent! Selfishly, he will be missed!

4. Dennis has set-up a free magic show at the Veterans’ Hospital. He is looking for volunteers to perform or just come and watch. (Veterans Administration Hospital near Kerman & Locust) It’s on June 19th at 4:00.

5. Treasurer’s report by Marty. Members MUST pay dues.

7. Our next Meeting is June 16th at 7:00 p.m. at the Holiday Inn. Dinner at 6:00. (Food starts at less that $5 bucks… VERY Reasonable!) Details of the Annual Club Contest will be shared. This will be a one minute trick contest.

8. For those who did not attend the April meeting, we had a ball with the Brown Bag Activity. This was an opportunity to improvise using objects found in a brown paper bag. It provided many laughs and demonstrated amazing creativity by club members.

9. We will continue our theme with the nine types of magic tricks. Mind Reading will be featured by club members. Bring your best psychic, psycho or psychotic reading trick and share it. Participation by all is encouraged but not required. We always have a ball when many members participate.

Hey Gang!

Just another REMINDER about THIS Tuesdays High Sierra Magic Circle and FUN Meeting!

Remember, Tuesday the 21st is our “Brown Bag” night where we get to put our ‘thinking caps on for a laugh-out-loud fun night of creativity with ordinary objects that we each bring to swap with others in a brown paper grocery bag loaded with some top-secret “item” to share!

Each take a sack with some ‘mystery’ item and then try and to doing something fun and entertaining with it… this is true creative ‘improv’ and it is a BLAST even if you have never don this before! (or even if you have!)

Honestly, the first time I tried this I thought I wouldn’t like it, but BOY WAS I WRONG! This is a hoot of the highest order and it is both fun to watch as it is to DO… you really want to both bring a Brown Bag Mystery Item to share as well as take a stab at this super fun performance game!

You WILL delight yourself in surprise as to how fun this really is!

BROWN BAG MAGIC NIGHT!
This is soooo much FUN to participate in! Simply bring a plane brown bag and put some object or objects inside the bag. (magic or non-magic) Your bag will be given to another person who will have a few minutes to check see what’s inside and then present a short entertaining trick or explanation of how these objects can be used. It’s all about improvisation. It’ll be fun and entertaining for all of us. The more people we have participating, the more fun we will generate. – This is FUN and everyone always enjoys themselves!

In case you have not heard, Jim Pace is lecturing in Sacramento on this Wednesday night (sponsored by local clubs – see attached flyer) and again on Thursday night (sponsored by Grand Illusions).

 Since I know Jim, I contacted him to let him know I look forward to seeing him in Sacramento on Wednesday night.

 He responded with an offer to come hold a lecture in Grass Valley on Friday night (Friday the 13th!).

 I thought that maybe the Reno magicians would be more apt to
(1) drive 90 minutes to Grass Valley (instead of over 2 hours to Sac), and
(2) more apt to travel on a weekend evening (rather than mid-week). 

So, I am inviting you all to the lecture.  Can you pass this email on to the other Reno magicians?
